Alum-Fab's technical teams understand that turning a curved architectural concept into a buildable facade requires disciplined digital coordination. From the initial concept through just-in-time deliveries and installation, BIM (Building Information Modelling) and advanced parametric design scripts play an increasingly important role.

A Digital Building Before Work Starts on Site

Digital construction workflows allow clients and contractors to work beyond flat plans and sections. Before heavy equipment reaches the site, the building can be developed virtually in a coordinated model. BIM enables facade teams to create a three-dimensional elevation model that contains both geometry and a substantial information database. Mullions, transoms, steel anchors and glazing can carry parameters such as coating thickness, unit weight, light transmission, delivery dates and maintenance instructions. This gives project participants a shared view of the design, supports live quantity and cost calculations, and helps plan factory production down to individual components and gaskets.

Image from the existing Alum-Fab website. Rounded domes, flowing forms and twisting towers can involve thousands of glass panels, each with a different curvature, profile cutting angle and connection detail. Manually drawing every component would be time-consuming and prone to error. Alum-Fab addresses these challenges through parametric design. Using platforms such as Rhino and Grasshopper, an engineer develops a script containing logical and mathematical rules. If an architect changes an arc at the top of a building, the algorithm can recalculate the connections below, update glass shapes and profile bending angles, and produce a revised bill of materials.

Multidisciplinary Coordination and Clash Detection at LOD 400 and Above

A facade never functions independently of the rest of the building. It surrounds the reinforced-concrete frame, meets ventilation systems, conceals roof drainage pipes and shares service zones with electrical installations. A costly error arises when an installer attempts to fix a bracket where another service has already been installed. Detailed BIM models at a Level of Development (LOD) of around 400 or above, coordinated in a common data environment, help identify these conflicts. Clash detection software marks hard clashes in the virtual model. Engineers from different disciplines can resolve them months before installation. The source article reports reductions in material waste from site rework of up to 90% in such projects; project-specific evidence is needed to substantiate that figure.

From the 3D Model to CNC Production

Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is a key link in the digital chain. A parametric model coordinated within BIM can support much more than visualisation. It can export specialist production files, often including G-code, for machines in the factory. A connection model can define the cutting angle for a five-axis saw and the drilling positions for a CNC machining centre. This reduces dependence on manual measurement and supports accurate assembly of facade modules on site, an important advantage under demanding commercial construction programmes.

BIM, parametric modelling and digital coordination in the manufacture of complex aluminium facades.

[16
98,96,100,99,97
post-15085","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-technology","tag-aluminium-facades","tag-bim","tag-cnc-manufacturing","tag-digital-construction","tag-parametric-design
